Patek Philippe 5500 Pagoda

The Patek Philippe reference 5500, universally known as the Pagoda, is one of the manufacture's most celebrated commemorative timepieces and the watch that paved the way for the modern Gondolo collection. Introduced in 1997 to mark the inauguration of Patek Philippe's new manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, the 5500 was produced as a limited edition of 2,000 watches across four precious metals. Its distinctive stepped rectangular case was inspired by the legendary vintage Reference 2441 of the 1940s, whose architectural profile earned it the nickname "Pagoda." Powered by the manually wound Calibre 215 PS, the watch combined classical Genevan craftsmanship with a bold case design that stood apart from the traditional round Calatrava.

Although created as a commemorative edition rather than a regular production model, the 5500 established the design language that would later define the Gondolo collection. Its elegant Art Deco-inspired case, clean dial and exceptional proportions demonstrated Patek Philippe's enduring appreciation for shaped wristwatches, recalling the celebrated Chronometro Gondolo timepieces produced during the early twentieth century. Available in yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and platinum, each version was finished to the manufacture's exacting standards, with the platinum model and its black dial becoming particularly sought after by collectors.

Today, the reference 5500 is regarded as one of the most significant modern Patek Philippe dress watches, valued as much for its historical importance as for its rarity. It serves as the spiritual predecessor to later Gondolo references such as the 5100, 5101, 5109, 5124 and 5200, bridging the gap between the manufacture's vintage shaped watches and its contemporary collection.
